Smithfield resident owned and operated since 2015. Mason Martial Arts Academy (MMAA) is home to Smithfield's FIRST BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU PROGRAM.
We are dedicated to the Art of Jiu Jitsu brought to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda in the early 1900's and taught to the Gracie Family, which later spread to the United States and around the world.
From the battle fields of Feudal Japan, to Jigaro Kano's Kodokan training hall near Tokyo, to the streets of Brazil, and finally to the shores of the United States; Jiu Jitsu has been pressure tested in the harshest environments and found to be the most effective form of self-defense. Jiu Jitsu has been slightly modernized and reformed since those earlier days but it remains widely known as a Martial Art designed to allow a smaller and weaker person defeat a much larger and stronger opponent (attacker) using technique, leverage, and strategy.
"We do with our hands what the Samurai did with their swords." - Helio Gracie
We are a small, but selective group of Jiu Jitsu enthusiasts training in the complete Art of Jiu Jitsu in an ego-free environment. We believe that the mat doesn't lie and it makes us all equal.
